Fifty Days of Prayer | Day 9

Praying for Church Planting through the Book of Acts

Praying for Church Planting through the Book of Acts

The institution of the deacons was the introduction to Stephen. He was one of the leaders of the early church and the first martyr. He is described in today's passage as "a man full of God's grace and power" who "performed great wonders and signs among the people" (6:8). When opposition came against the church, it came in the form of arguments between Stephen and a local synagogue. But, the Spirit worked in him to give him great wisdom. So, we pray for great wisdom, insight, Spirit-filled power, and grace.

So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.

Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people. Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)—Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia—who began to argue with Stephen. But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.

Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, “We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.”

So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin. They produced false witnesses, who testified, “This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law. For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses handed down to us.”

All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

We Pray for the Spirit's Wisdom and Power

  • Pray that the Spirit would allow me to be a man "full of God's grace" (6:8)
  • Pray that God would be pleased to display his power through me (6:8)
  • Pray that the Spirit would give me great wisdom in dealing with non-believers (6:10)
  • Pray in Jesus' name against those who would oppose the work of the gospel, especially those who use religion to do it.
