Praying for Church Planting through the Book of Acts
Yesterday we prayed through Acts 1. The church was small in those days, no more than 120 men, women, and children. But they had seen the resurrected Christ (Acts 1:3). They were expecting the Holy Spirit to come in power (1:8). Though they were a small gathering they had a place to meet, people to gather with, and they were devoted to prayer.
Then the Holy Spirit came. The church began to speak in various languages and the crowds gathered in Jerusalem heard "them speak in [their] own language." Praying for the power of the Spirit for effective evangelism had been answered. The Holy Spirit enabled them to cross impassable language barriers in an instant! These men and women were gathered from all over the known world and heard the church "telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God" (2:11). So, we pray for many to celebrate the mighty work of God.
This work of the Spirit allowed Peter to stand and preach a sermon from Joel 2:28-32 and Psalm 16:8-11. He pointed to the greatest and most mighty work of God: the death and resurrection of Christ (2:22-24). Along with speaking in tongues so that all could hear the gospel, Peter declared the good news with boldness. The result was that all who heard repented and believed in Christ. We're told that "about three thousand souls" (2:41) were saved that day. So, we pray for mass conversion through the Spirit-filled preaching.
The result of this powerful work of the Spirit was the formation of a community. They were devoted to one another and the apostle's teaching (2:42). They saw signs and wonders (2:43). They cared for the poor (2:44-45). The church grew day-by-day (2:47). So, we pray that the Spirit would keep us devoted to the Word, that he would perform signs and wonders, that we would care for the poor, and that the church would grow through conversion day-by-day.
Pray for the Mighty Work of God:
"Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God." (Acts 2:9-11)
Pray that the Spirit would work in mighty ways in our communities and neighborhoods
Pray that the Spirit would work to gather a diverse body of people
Pray for Spirit-Filled Preaching
"[Jesus] Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing." (Acts 2:33)
Pray for the Lord to fill me with the Holy Spirit as I preach
Pray for the Lord to empower me with the Spirit and lead many to faith through preaching the gospel
Pray for a Devoted Community
"And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved." (Acts 2:42-47).
Pray that God would create a community devoted to the apostle's teaching and fellowship
Pray that God would perform signs and wonders among us and the neighborhood
Pray that God would use us to care for the poor, the widowed, and the orphan (James 1:26-27)
Pray that God would grow the church through conversion day-by-day
