Fifty Days of Prayer | Day 1

Yesterday I sent out the first of fifty days of a prayer plan through the book of Acts. It was sent to those who already receive my newsletter as a specific call to prayer. I would like to post those here as a resource for others and a call to anyone else who would like to join in praying for us as we seek to plant a church in Houston.

Praying for Church Planting through the Book of Acts

Recently, I met a man named Terry Teykl. He is an unassuming man, small in stature and quiet in personality. But when he prays, God does amazing things. Here's one story: Many years ago Terry was sent to College Station to start a church. He was given a building and parsonage, but had no people. On top of that, the property was $300,000 in debt. As a new graduate from seminary he didn't have much experience to fall back on, so he did the only thing he knew to do. He prayed.

Halfway through the first hour of his first prayer vigil a young man knocked on his door. The man said, "I want to become a follower of Jesus, can you help me do that?" They talked. They prayed. The young man came to faith. The following week he began to pray at the same time. Halfway through a knock came at the door. There stood another young man with the same request: "I want to become a follower of Christ, can you help me?"

Since those early days in College Station, Texas God has done unbelievable things through this simple man who prayed. He challenged me to begin to pray through the book of Acts. I want you to join me. Over the next ten days I will send you verses from Acts with specific points of prayer. Pray through those verses and ask the Holy Spirit to come in power.

We want to see God continue the work of Christ through the Holy Spirit that he began in Acts. That will happen if we pray. So, please pray with me and let's watch what God will do!

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will bemy witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.

In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120)
— Acts 1:1-15

Pray for Power:

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:8)

  • Pray that the Spirit would empower us to be faithful witnesses to Christ

  • Pray that the Spirit would lead us to those who are being drawn by him.

  • Pray that the Spirit would lead men, women, and families to faith.

Pray for a Place

"they went up to the upper room room, where they were staying" (Acts 1:13)

  • Pray for the Lord to provide us with a place to gather and pray

  • Pray for the Lord to lead us to a target neighborhood in Houston

  • Pray for the Lord to give us a place to live in the target neighborhood

Pray for People

"All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120)" (Acts 1:14-15).

  • Pray that God would gather a group of committed followers of Christ who know the resurrected Jesus (1:3)

  • Pray that God would bring together different kinds of people (young/old, black/white/ married/single)

  • Pray that God would create a team of 120
